Atma and Paramatma

Atma means the Soul, you and me, and all the other individual beings we see here. Paramatma means Bhagavan the Supersoul who sits alongside us in our hearts and witnesses all our actions. Mundaka Upanisad, as well as the Svetasvatara Upanisad, compare the soul and the Supersoul to two friendly birds sitting on the same tree. One of the birds (Atma) is enjoying and suffering in the world and the other bird (Supersoul) is simply watching His friend. These two birds are the same in quality, but different in capacity.…
